Lexical Field (in progress)
Series of 16 mm short films with generative sound and subtitles, Canada, 2024-2027
Through automated textual analysis and generation, automated sound generation, and 16 mm film, this video series with generative subtitles explores how art museums respond semantically to the imperative of sustainable development.
The project is based on 16 mm footage shot at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as video editing. It also relies on automated lexical and semantic analysis and generation, as well as on the resulting formatting of written material, which is assigned in real time during the projection. In doing so, it explores the concept of ecological transition and its inherent contradictions, as well as the relationships that museum institutions forge with the living world, sometimes in spite of themselves.
